Orthotic braces, or orthoses, are external medical devices designed to support, align, prevent, or correct the function of musculoskeletal structures. Unlike prosthetics, which replace a limb, orthoses are worn to enhance or restore the function of an existing body part. They are custom-fitted or pre-fabricated and come in various forms, including ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs), spinal orthoses (e.g., back braces), and wrist/hand orthoses. Orthotic braces are used for a wide range of conditions, such as correcting foot drop, stabilizing an injured knee, managing scoliosis, or providing support during rehabilitation after a stroke or spinal cord injury. By providing external support, limiting unwanted motion, or assisting weak muscles, orthotic braces play a crucial role in pain reduction, improved mobility, injury prevention, and long-term functional independence.
